Manchester: March 2014

The Student Filmmaker Award

Loyola logoThe Insight Film Festival is working with Loyola Productions, Inc., a Hollywood film production studio, and Jesuits in Britain, to enable the winning student filmmaker to fulfil the dream of a lifetime: to spend time living and working in the Los Angeles film community.

ClapperboardOne filmmaker will be chosen for the quality of their work and the ‘seriousness’ of their commitment to their art by a process of submitting films, screenplays, storyboards and scripts to the competition and engaging in interviews with the Insight jury, which will include Eddie Siebert, President, Loyola Productions.

The brief for eligible entries

The competition recognises student filmmakers as new voices for understanding and discernment, telling powerful stories that can encourage social change in a world often characterised by intolerance, and cultural and religious divisions. The Insight Film Festival, which began in Manchester in 2007, encourages filmmakers of all backgrounds to consider ‘faith’ as an important theme in filmmaking. In doing so, it wants to contribute to community cohesion. It is partnering with Loyola Productions and Jesuits in Britain to offer a valuable opportunity to a student filmmaker in Greater Manchester to experience working with a Hollywood film production company from the inside, by inviting entrants to submit films on the theme of ‘Portraying Faith in Film’ in whatever way they choose.

Entry is free: films will be judged in the first instance by a panel of Insight Film Festival organisers, who include professional filmmakers, academics and media people. A small shortlist of films will be selected as finalists by the judges to be interviewed in a process that may also involve a Skype conversation with Loyola Productions. They will be looking for an entrant who is ‘serious about filmmaking’ and, in their opinion, would make the best use of the internship prize.

Generating ideas for entries

Student filmmakers who return their entry form (see below) to the Insight Film Festival by 11 April 2014 will receive an invitation to a free film workshop with Insight Patron and acclaimed screenwriter, Frank Cottrell Boyce, at the Manchester University’s Catholic Chaplaincy. The workshop will discuss and explore tips that make for award-winning films.

Details of how to submit films for the Student Filmmaker Award competition are available on the Award rules page.
