FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

‘I’m not religious, why should I bother about the Insight Festival?’
Because you are seriously interested in making films or moving image presentations. You want to expand your mind and see how for next year’s Festival your work to be recognised on our platform, whatever your beliefs and background. You want your work to offer a valuable contribution to the society you belong to. Oh… and you might win one of our amazing prizes!

‘Why has religious faith been chosen for the subject matter?’

Because it is one of the driving forces behind so many of society’s dynamics today. Whether you agree with it or not; understand it or not; or whether you think it is a good or bad thing, there has never been a greater need for real insight and communication on the subject of faith. The subject was chosen to encourage those interested in film making to make a contribution.

‘What do I expect to find at the Festival’

Expect to find passionate film makers of all ages and from all backgrounds. Expect to be blown away by expressions of faith on film – through films that you might not see anywhere else. Expect to be challenged through workshops, presentations and our Festival Lecture with world renowned screenwriter Frank Cottrell Boyce.

‘How were films shortlisted for the Insight Festival?’

Entries were assessed by a preliminary judging panel and a certain number were offered for presentation to our high profile judging panel. The winning film and any runners up will be announced at our Festival Screenings in Manchester, UK on Sunday 4th December 2011.

‘How were entries shortlisted?’

The selection committee carefully viewed every submitted film to be submitted to the main judging panel. They were mindful of technical quality and aesthetic judgements, taking into account likely production budgets. Particular attention was paid to those films which encourage a complex insight or reflection on faith.

‘Do you expect the film to be about the faith of the film maker?’

It might be, if it can help those outside their faith with insights they can understand. But equally film makers were invited to make a film about the faith of someone else.

‘Can a sponsored film connected with religion be eligible?’

Yes, it is eligible if it fulfils the entry specification. If a third party has paid for the production or covered production costs.

‘What do the judges look for?’

They bring their professional standards to assess the effectiveness of the movies. They watch for productions which give insight on what is making some people passionate about faith in this modern world.

‘Do the films have to promote faith? Or be in favour of faith?’

Not necessarily. The festival does not specify conclusions, just that films entered contribute something to understanding faith in some way. They may present faith in sympathetic or a non non-sympathetic light.

‘Is the Insight Festival for ‘young’ film makers?’

We especially want to encourage film makers under the age of 35. So some of our awards are targeted to those who may be developing their careers. However we welcome interest from everyone. If you are under 18 please click here to be taken to the ‘Faith Shorts’ competition.

‘Is this a Festival for the world?’

The Festival began in Manchester, England. For the first two years, entry was restricted to film makers from the UK alone. However we have received so much global interest that this year we are inviting entries from all over the world. The event – during December 2011 – will be held in Manchester (UK), with information and interaction available through the net.

‘Is the Insight Festival still developing?’

Yes! We welcome feedback and partnership discussions with anyone interested. Please contact us on team@insightfestival.co.uk
