The background to the film

PemaThis brilliant film four-minute film was made by Yeshey Namgyal. It’s about his friend who lives in the Thimphu, Bhutan as Yeshey does. His friend has achieved more than most of us can dream about.

Yeshey, a 24-year-old from Bhutan, has made the remarkable film which has deservedly won the PLURAL+ Insight Award 2014. The prize trophy will be presented to Yeshey at the PLURAL+ Awards Ceremony on Thursday, 4 December 2014 in New York City.

Yeshey has been part of the ‘Saving 100 Youth’ programme run by YMC, a non-profit NGO that offers media skills to disadvantaged young people in his home town. Unemployment in Bhutan has created a group of disadvantaged young people at risk from crime and drug abuse. The ‘Saving 100 Youth’ programme works amongst these people.

With the help of Indiegogo contributors and Insight Festival supporters, we have succeeded in raising enough money to get Yeshey to New York City … to be there in person to receive his Award.

You can read an interview with Yeshey conducted by Mischa at Voices of Youth, UNICEF’s online place for young people to learn more about issues affecting their world.

The campaign

Now that Yeshey is to receive the 2014 PLURAL+ Insight Award in person – in New York City – Insight is engaged in the next phase of our campaign.

The money we raised throughout our 30-day Indiegogo crowdfunding project (from 99 donors ranging from GBP 1.00 to GBP 900.00) raised 52% of the financial contributions we needed to fully fund Yeshey’s trip.

The Insight team worked hard to address this shortfall by the date of the PLURAL+ Awards Ceremony. We adapted our plans and negotiated good deals and in-kind sponsorships partnerships to cover the remaining costs.

The level of support we received from Indiegogo customer services and senior management was phenomenal. Indiegogo publish a fantastic resource for filmmakers to raise funding via crowdfunding sites called Indiegogo Crowdfunding for Film Handbook. This PDF is free to download: it is full of advice, tips and useful contacts. We encourage filmmakers wanting to raising money from crowdfunding to download the Film Handbook to help them to prepare for their campaigns.

And finally …

This video was made to capture a little of the excitement around the Insight’s campaign to get Yeshey to New York City.
